Four Simple Tips to Improve Your Website's SEO

Search engine optimization. SEO. Search engine marketing. Whatever you like to call it, there is no doubt that it plays a crucial role in your digital strategy and in helping people find your website. Unfortunately, there is no holy grail of SEO that can be implemented onto your site that will help you shoot to the top of Google rankings. The reality is that good SEO takes a lot of work, testing, and optimizing to find out what works and what doesn’t work. That being said, these four tips can help you get off on the right foot if you are struggling with where to begin your SEO strategy.

Tip #1: Write Quality Titles and Meta Descriptions

Whenever doing a website or SEO audit, I’m always shocked to see the number of sites that neglect to fill out meta descriptions or write compelling browser titles for their pages. While Google hasn’t used meta descriptions as a ranking factor in a number of years, it still helps to write compelling content that accurately displays what your page is about to help achieve higher click through rates. While this might seem like a no-brainer to some, it is worth noting that this is one of the easiest ways to improve organic SEO.

When writing your browser titles (ex. Blog-SilverTech) be sure to explain what the page is, include your organization’s name, and keep it between 50 and 60 characters. For meta descriptions, include relevant keywords to the page and keep it between 150 and 160 characters.

Improving SEO is a process, it takes time, and if you stick with it, you will start to see some positive results.

Tip #2: Improve Your Page Load Speed

The speed at which your website loads plays a role in where you are ranked on search engines and Google is much more likely to rank you higher if your site has a positive user experience and loads quickly. This is especially important for mobile since visitors expect mobile sites to load just as quickly as desktop ones do. If your site has a poor mobile experience, you may be falling in organic mobile search results. In fact, smartphones are now the most popular device for accessing the internet, and if your site isn’t optimized for mobile you are missing out on a large chunk of potential traffic.

Tip #3: Provide Useful and Relevant Content

If you are familiar with SEO, you have probably heard about the updates Google made to their search filter and algorithm called Panda and Hummingbird. There has been a lot of digital ink written about these two updates, but the main takeaways you should get out of these updates is this: Google is paying more attention to the individual words in search queries, and Google is putting more value on fresh, relevant content. The bottom line is that Google wants to help people find the answers to their search queries and give them the best results possible. If you have up-to-date content that is useful and relevant to searchers, your site is more likely to rank higher. It’s as simple as that.

Tip #4: Test, Optimize, and Repeat

The final tip on this list is probably the most difficult. As I mentioned earlier, people want a quick fix to improve SEO, but it doesn’t really work that way. Even if you implement these tips, you will still need to monitor their progress and go back to make changes if something isn’t working. The important thing to keep in mind is that improving SEO is a process, it takes time, and if you stick with it, you will start to see some positive results.

While there are definitely more things you can do to improve your website SEO, these four tips are a great place to start for any organization. If you’re looking for help with your SEO strategy, contact the experts at SilverTech today.
