The Future of Digital Advertising Is Already Here: What Google’s Recent Shakeups and ChatGPT Ads Mean for Marketers

By: Lindsay Moura | 8/19/26

The digital advertising landscape is evolving faster than ever. Over the last several months, new developments have emerged that marketers should be paying close attention to:

1. Google Search Console can now report on which Google searches are driving traffic to content on social media platforms.

2. Google is retiring standalone Display campaign creation and migrating Display advertising into Demand Gen campaigns.

3. OpenAI is expanding access to advertising within ChatGPT, opening a new frontier for brands looking to reach consumers during high-intent discovery moments.

At SilverTech, we're actively helping clients navigate these shifts. While these changes may seem unrelated to one another at first glance, but they point to the same larger trend: advertising is becoming increasingly driven by AI, audience intent, and contextual relevance.

Google's Display Network Isn't Going Away. But How You Place that Media Is Changing.

For years, Google Display campaigns have been a core component of many digital advertising strategies, providing broad reach across 2 million websites and apps. Now, Google is moving Display inventory into its Demand Gen campaign type, creating a more unified approach to visual advertising across Google's ecosystem.

Under the new structure, advertisers can still run Google Display ads and access the Google Display Network, but campaign creation and management will take place within Demand Gen. Demand Gen can extend ads across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps, and the Display Network from a single campaign environment.

What This Means for Advertisers

The migration introduces several important considerations:

Existing Display campaigns will need to be transitioned.
New Display focused campaigns will eventually only be created within Demand Gen.
Creative requirements are evolving, placing greater emphasis on static image assets and multi-surface creative formats.
Bidding and optimization rely more heavily on Google's AI and audience signals than traditional Display campaign management.

SilverTech's Perspective

While Google's change creates opportunities for broader reach and AI-powered optimization, advertisers should understand that Demand Gen is not a one-for-one replacement for a traditional Display campaign.

As SilverTech’s Senior Media Manager, Hannah Sabo, explains:

"While Demand Gen can expand visibility across Google's visual network, it still operates very differently than traditional Display campaigns. You should expect changes in how we can target, bidding models, creative requirements, and even the data output on performance. We’ll have to test and evaluate over time its effectiveness – good or bad.”

This is especially important for organizations that have historically relied on Display campaigns for awareness, remarketing, or precise placement targeting. A thoughtful migration strategy is essential to preserve performance and avoid disruption.

The bottom line: this isn't simply a platform update. It's a strategic shift in how Google believes advertisers should reach audiences.

ChatGPT Advertising: The Next Rising Digital Ad Channel

While marketers continue to adapt to Google's always evolving ad ecosystem, another opportunity is emerging that may prove even more transformative over time: advertising within AI-powered engines.

OpenAI has begun expanding advertising availability inside ChatGPT after initially limiting participation to a small group of pilot advertisers. The company has publicly outlined its approach to introducing conversational advertising while maintaining separation between sponsored content and AI-generated responses.

This development matters because consumer behavior is changing.

People are increasingly turning to AI assistants to:

     Research products
     Compare service providers
     Evaluate financial options
     Ask for recommendations
     Troubleshoot problems
     Make purchasing decisions

Instead of typing keywords into a search engine, users are having conversations.

And that's creating entirely new advertising opportunities.

Why AI Advertising Matters

Conversational AI is built around intent (not necessarily keywords).

When users engage with ChatGPT, they're often providing far more context than they ever would in a traditional search query. Rather than searching for "best checking account," they may ask: "I'm moving to a new city and want a checking account with good mobile banking and low fees. What banks have the best options?" This additional context creates powerful opportunities for relevance.

Advertising within AI environments allows brands to appear during these high-intent decision-making moments when users are actively seeking guidance.

What Makes ChatGPT Different

Unlike traditional search ads, ad eligibility is driven by contextual signals and the conversation itself.

OpenAI has stated that advertisements are clearly labeled, separate from organic responses, and selected based on relevance to the user's current conversation.

This creates several advantages:

Reach and potentially even convert consumers earlier in their research and consideration journey
Align with rich conversational intent rather than keywords (and ones heavily reliant on Google’s match type model)
Surface solutions during product evaluation and comparison moments

Search is No Longer Just Search

Google Just Gave Marketers a Glimpse of the Future

As if Google's Demand Gen migration and the rise of ChatGPT advertising weren't enough, Google also recently introduced yet another update that signals where digital discovery is heading.

Google Search Console now allows brands to connect social media channels like Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube directly to the platform, making it possible to see which Google searches are driving traffic to content on those social platforms. With this integration, marketers can now track impressions, clicks, traffic trends, and the search queries that lead users to social and video content on those separate platforms.

For years, SEO, social media, and content marketing were often measured independently. Google's latest update effectively acknowledges what consumer behavior has already shown us: People don't care what platform they're using. They care about finding answers. Whether that answer comes from:

     A website
     A YouTube or TikTok video
     An Instagram Reel
     A Facebook post
     An AI-generated response

For organizations investing heavily in content marketing, thought leadership, video, and social media, this creates a much clearer picture of how your audience is actually finding and engage with your brand. This also closely aligns to what we know about regulated industries and the need to ensure consistent and updated digital content across all digital platforms.

The Real Story Behind All Three Updates

At first glance, these latest updates may seem like unrelated product announcements. They're not.

Together, they signal one of the biggest shifts we've seen in digital marketing over the past decade: discovery Is fragmenting. Consumers no longer begin their journey purely with Google and end at a website. They research solutions and discover brands through:

     Traditional search engines
     AI engines like ChatGPT
     YouTube videos
     Instagram and TikTok content
     Reddit
     Google Places and Maps listings

In response, the major technology platforms are evolving to reflect this reality. The future of marketing isn't about being visible just on Google. It's about being visible wherever discovery happens.

SilverTech’s Perspective and Key Takeaways

This is all why we're increasingly helping clients focus on what we call a search-everywhere strategy and continued holistic approach to digital ecosystems and marketing strategy. It’s not about (and never has been) a single channel or tactic, but rather all of it working together to reach, resonate, and remind your audience about who you are.

Success is no longer measured solely by rankings, impressions, or website traffic and conversions. It's measured by whether your brand can be found and referenced as the top authoritative answer during key moments of research, comparison, evaluation, and decision-making, regardless of platform.

For our clients and other organizations operating in highly competitive markets, the opportunity isn't simply to adapt to these platform changes. It's to use them as an advantage.

The brands that embrace this shift today will gain more than improved campaign performance. They'll develop a deeper understanding of how modern consumers discover information, evaluate options, and make decisions in an increasingly AI-driven world.

This all reinforces a fundamental truth: the future of digital marketing belongs to brands that can connect with consumers based on intent, context, and relevance, wherever discovery happens.
