Simple Living with Salesforce

by: SilverTech

You chose the path of deep customization during your implementation. It seemed to make the most sense. Salesforce is a powerful tool, perhaps one of the most powerful in modern business. In order to maximize your investment, you felt it should bend and shape itself to your organization. You looked down the path of out-of-the-box implementation and felt you could do more for your organization. However, all of those custom fields are now causing confusion among your sales reps. You also now realize that if your Salesforce admin were to leave, you would have no one that could understand the tangled web you’ve weaved. Life is full of distractions and complications, and now so too is your sales process.

In order to free himself from the distractions of life, Henry David Thoreau famously isolated himself for two years, two months, and two days at Walden Pond. Now, I’m not recommending that you walk out of your office, sell your worldly possessions, and move to a hut by the side of a pond. I am, however, suggesting that there are lessons to be learned from the simple living philosophy. Thoreau shed his worldly possessions in order to “live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life.” Consider for a moment that your deep customization is akin to Thoreau’s possessions; distracting and unnecessarily complicated. Out-of-the-box, is a powerful and enlightening tool; one that can drive the sales results that you are looking for while freeing you from the dependence on one admin with all of the knowledge.

Without any coding, you can configure layouts, set up sales automation and email alerts, and customize validation options so that your opportunities look like the opportunities your company is after. Start there. Maybe even try OOTB for two years, two months, and two days to see what works and what doesn’t. Thoreau’s time living simply at Walden was not a permanent life choice. It was a time for reflection-free from distraction.
